If you are a first time visitor, don't try to arrive after dark
. There are very few signs along the way do to sign restrictions by the county and forest service. Below are the simplest directions
1. West or Eastbound on Hwy 160: Go to Bayfield, Co, turn north on CR 501 at the only traffic light in town. Follow the signs to Vallecito. See No. 2 below. (It's approximately 30 minutes to the campground. Avoid going through the City of Durango with an RV.)
2. Follow CR 501 north to Vallecito. Just before getting to the dam, DO NOT TURN right onto 501-A where the signs indicate US Forest Service Campgrounds. IGNORE YOUR GPS!! Proceed straight on west side
of lake and around north side for approx. 10 miles. The road is paved except the final 2 miles. When the gravel road starts, there is a 5 Branches sign with "Kilroy" on top. Take a look at the map posted. We recommend that you read it. Proceed approximately 1.5 miles where you will come to a "Y" at a blue 21700 address sign. Take the right road past Middle Mountain Campground and proceed through Elk Point Lodge property. Go past the Elk Point Lodge office. DO NOT follow the exit signs in Elk Point Lodge. Stay to the right. looking right for the road and the yellow YIELD sign, going down the hill
, to the bridge crossing over the Pine River. Welcome! Please park along road (rvs), or in the parking lot (cars). Come on in to the 5 Branches office to check in. Bring your confirmation letter and your vehicle license plate number.
(IF YOU CROSS A CATTLE GUARD ON THE UPPER ROAD, YOU HAVE MADE A WRONG TURN
and will have to travel 3 miles to a parking lot at a trail head before you can turn around.)
We Welcome You to the Lake!
